Blantyre Adventist Hospital
A 35-bed hospital with outpatient clinics and two operating theaters is located in Blantyre, a city of more than 700,000 with a catchment area that includes all of southern Malawi (about 6 million people). While Lilongwe is the political capital of Malawi, Blantyre is the largest city and is known as the economic capital.
Blantyre Adventist Hospital (BAH) has an excellent team of physicians that are already known to provide some of the best medical care in the country. With rapid recent growth and urbanization, the city is in desperate need of advanced medical care. There are only a handful of intensive care beds in the entire southern region of 6 million people, and no cardiologist in the entire country! BAH is currently constructing an 8-bed intensive care unit and cardiovascular outpatient center to be run by Dr. Tiffany Priester to help meet this need. Dr. Priester completed her internal medicine training at the Mayo Clinic and is currently finishing a cardiovascular diseases fellowship at the University of Utah.
Currently, patients seeking this type of medical care are limited to only those who can afford to travel to South Africa for treatment. Others simply go without. The BAH team estimates there are enough patients to support the training and equipment needed for this type of advanced health care. However, we are seeking donations to purchase the equipment needed to start. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to finish building and outfitting the intensive care unit and cardiovascular clinic.
Current specific needs:
Portable echocardiogram machine - $30,000
ICU equipment - $20,000
Respiratory isolation room construction - $10,000
Cardiology clinic equipment – $5,000
Please consider a donation to help us in this needed endeavor! Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and currently has one of the lowest doctor to population ratios. Many people live on only $1 per day.
Completion of the ICU and cardiovascular clinic is a vital step toward increasing the level of health care provided in Malawi and would allow us to more appropriately diagnose and treat severe infections, congenital and acquired heart diseases, complicated surgical cases, and other serious and life-threatening illnesses.
